Top 5 Things to Do on a Sunday

Submitted by Alice on Wednesday, 23 September 2009No Comment

Shops close early, afternoon telly is rubbish and if there’s nothing good on at the cinema then most people are stuck with little else to do on a Sunday than twiddle their thumbs. But, if you know the right places to go, then a Sunday in London can bring all sorts of unexpected pleasures. So, here’s our top 5 five tips for things to do on a Sunday in London.

Haggle at a Car Boot Sale
Buying second hand goods that other people no longer want hit the height of its popularity about the same time that David Dickenson’s big orange face starting appearing on BBC1. In some of the more sophisticated London markets, tatty old junk is disguised as ‘vintage’ but thankfully Britain’s traditional car boot sale strips used items of all such pretence. One of the best haunts for bargain basement goods is the Holloway Road Car Boot Sale where every Sunday you can pick up anything from fruit and veg, to books and DVDs.

Go to Church

Even the sinners go to Church sometimes. The Church in Kentish Town has been opening its doors to rowdy punters searching for a boozy afternoon for the past 30 years. The “service” begins at 12pm with cheap drinks, cheesy music and the occasional burlesque performance. Fancy dress costumes are a must here if you don’t want to look like an amateur – but expect a few dodgy looks when you catch the Tube home at 4.30pm.

Do a Museum Crawl
For some people, one museum a day is more than enough, but if you’re an avid culture vulture then you’ll want to invest in a London Pass. With this golden ticket you get free entry to dozens of museums and art gallerias across the capital including the Royal Air Force Museum and the Tate Modern.

Have a Sunday Roast
Cooking your own Sunday lunch is an age old British activity and the ultimate bonding experience between you and your new flatmate. Problem is, after a heavy Saturday night or if you’re cursed with lack lustre culinary skills, then sometimes it’s just better to eat out. The best Sunday Roast I’ve had in London was at the Coach and Horses near Clapham Common tube. The portions are huge, with real gravy, and the chicken is served whole on a large platter – so you might need a few friends to finish this one off!

Take in a Matinee at the National Theatre
Most London theatres have an afternoon matinée but the National Theatre’s always brilliant programme and picturesque location by the Thames really sets it above the rest. There’s nothing nicer than grabbing a bite to eat or a stroll along the South Bank to clear your head before diving into a thrilling performance at one of London’s best theatres.
